If the elegant Elie Saab can’t do it for the green-eyed Bollywood dreamboat, then many stylists feel, nothing really can. The blue embroidered tulle gown with the hideous hairdo made Aishwarya Rai look as if she was trying too hard at the Cannes film festival recently where she made a not-so-memorable red carpet appearance. There is just something that Mrs Bachchan doesn’t do right, somehow despite being God’s favourite child (she’s got those killer looks), she often misses the boat.
Many feel that her off white Roberto Cavalli gown last year was her most sensible choice of ensembles till today. “I think she really doesn’t understand her body type and has no personal sense of style, plus it is really sad to see that after so many years on the red carpet, she goofs up consistently. I didn’t quite like the layers on that gown, she looked plump and the gown was most unflattering,” says designer Gautam Rakha.
With the French Riviera buzzing with celebs dripping diamonds and flaunting Harry Winstons and Bottega Venetas, our tall and statuesque Deepika Padukone managed to create quite a buzz with her “right choice”. She wore a stunning mildly embroidered sari by Rohit Bal. “I think she is just beautiful, long limbed and I am not saying this because Deepika chose to flaunt a sari, but I feel she has a strong style radar and it catches what will look good on her,” says designer Jatin Kochar.
“Why must Ash always try to fit in, and wear gowns, why not a sari? After all she is representing India on a global platform,” says Jatin.
What surprises many is that Ash, despite having access to the best designers and stylists, never manages to get the look quite right. “She definitely needs help and I would go so far as to say that her horrendous gowns really do nothing to accentuate that chiseled face and perfect frame. What she needs is a simple, sexy look and not a complicated gown that makes her look dowdy,” says stylist Harmeet Bajaj.
But Ash seems to be everyone’s favourite punching bag even though some do give her credit for the Armani gown she wore in 2007. “Why can’t she stick to Indian ensembles? They look best on her, as she is a classic beauty. Her hairstyle too was a bit too much, that beehive on the top of her head needed to be smoothened out. She needs to adopt a more relaxed look that makes it stand out and not fit in,” says designer Pankaj Ahuja.
Though Ash’s trial with hair and makeup and her trysts with hairstyles are likely to continue, designer Manish Arora feels that Ash may not have swung it in her favour completely but she has been better than before. “I thought it was not great, but it wasn’t so bad either,” he adds.
Kolkata-based style guru Anamika Khanna feels that Deepika Padukone was wise enough to wear a sari, it was the right choice. “Though I don’t like to comment on star’s personal style, I feel that Indian women always do much better with the Indian look, Ash’s look was like a borrowed one.

With the real estate sector beginning to look up again, architecture is also poised for growth. There are about 150 Schools of Architecture in the country, which are approved by the Council of Architecture. Each offers a B. Arch degree, which enables graduates to register with the Council of Architecture and practice as architects. Says Ashish Saxena, Architect, Stambha Design House, New Delhi, “To be an architect one needs to have a knack for design and construction.’’ The University School of Architecture and Planning offers a five-year full time course leading to a Bachelor of Architecture degree. To pursue this course, the minimum eligibility requirement is 10+2 with mathematics and physics. As per the Council of Architecture’s norms, you must also pass NATA or the National Aptitude Test in Architecture that is conducted by the Council of Architecture. This measures your aptitude in drawing and your observation skills, sense of proportion, aesthetic sensitivity, critical thinking ability, etc. “You can go abroad for further studies. Almost all universities offer a postgraduation in architectural conversation, urban design, industrial design, landscape architecture and project management etc.,” says Saxena.
After completing the architecture course you can start as a junior architect, and go on to become senior architect and then team leader. You have chances with various architectural firms such as Arcob etc. who give juniors a good start. “It’s one’s own zeal, which drives him. Many start their own practice and earn independently servicing their own clients instead of sticking to a job format,” says Sanil Kumar, Architect, Stambha Design House.
“The job prospects in India are excellent. The prospects abroad however, will be contingent on the state of the economy in that country. However, it may be noted that Indian graduates invariably do well abroad,” says Professor AGK Menon, School of Planning and Architecture, GGSIPU. “The term permanence is now not associated with architecture, so people often renew and redesign their structures. Often old structures are razed to the ground. In fact, just like cars, architecture has also become a personal statement,” says Kumar. According to Professor Menon, A fresher or young architect can start his/her career with about Rs. 25,000 per month (in a metropolitan city), after that the sky is the limit for someone who is hard working!
British IELTS Scholarships higher studies
However it will be a tough competition as out of 40 shortlisted candidates, only eight scholars will receive scholarships worth Rs. 3 lakh each.
Eligibility: You should be an Indian resident and begin your full-time PG programme outside the country this year. It is important to remember that this scholarship will be feasible only with institutes that accept IELTS as their admission requirements. You should have a valid IELTS score with a minimum band score average of 6.5. The score is applicable for two years, hence test results since July 2008 are valid. And most importantly, provide an acceptance letter from the attending academic school by August 20, 2010.
Procedure: The first stage is to take an IELTS test if you have not done so, so far. You must take this test at a British Council centre and if you are unsure that your test centre is attached to the Council, then you may check by writing to the British Council. You may then download the application form from the official website and complete selection Task A at this initial stage. By August 6, 40 candidates will be notified via email who will then prepare a 10-minute presentation on a given topic, followed by an interview round. While you prepare for the final selection, do not forget to post your acceptance letter by August 20, as failure of submission will eliminate you from the race.

The scholarship will be awarded as part of your tuition fee directly to the university which you will attend but only after the British Council officially confirms your admission.
The OBCs, whose current number is estimated at anything between 35 to 40 per cent of the population, already enjoy a 27 per cent quota in government jobs and educational institutions, and if you add to this the long-standing 22.5 per cent reservation for Scheduled Castes and Tribes, there is a total quantum of reservation of 49.5 per cent.
In the last detailed census in which caste-related data were included, in the heyday of the British Raj, it was discovered that 58 per cent of castes had a population of less than 1,000. Also, this count had a lot of inaccuracies as the British, for instance, lumped Marathas and kunbis together as Marathas in the 1884 Bombay Gazetteer, while in the Nasik Gazetteer they were shown separately.
A later enumeration of castes in 1931 was also not done on a scientific basis. While it cannot be denied that the government does need an accurate count of the number of OBCs and other castes in the country, in order that the funds earmarked for their uplift are correctly allocated, it would be a huge mistake to conduct this caste census in a hurry. India is so ridden with the caste factor and the issue is so complex that the entire matter needs to be handled with a lot of care and sensitivity.
Decentralisation in data collection is an absolute must. Even Christians and Muslims in India are nowadays demanding reservation on the basis of caste! Political leaders who have built up their parties and risen to power in some states primarily on the basis of their caste identity bear a special responsibility. It is mainly at their urging that the government has decided to include caste in the census, something that had not been done since Independence, and they must therefore understand if they really want to ensure the uplift of OBCs and other “backward” groups, a meticulously-conducted count is imperative.
Speed, in this instance, is not of the essence, but accuracy is. These leaders should be aware, more so than some of their brethren, of the multiplicity of sub-castes and sub-groups under the broad OBC umbrella, which in some cases stretch into the thousands, with none comprising even one per cent of the total. There are also substantial area-wise variations, and all these would have to be synchronised while compiling accurate data on a nationwide basis. It is easy for things to go haywire: for example, between 1971 and 1981, it was discovered that Maharashtra’s Scheduled Tribe population had shot up disproportionately. It was eventually found that this was because the Halba tribe suddenly claimed it fell into the ST category.
With no systematic data collection methods, it is easy for similar inaccuracies to creep in elsewhere. For the forseeable future, there appears no alternative but for India to live with its caste-based divisions. But no government and no political party — and particularly those who espouse the cause of the “backwards” — should lose sight of their ultimate responsibility to ensure the speedy uplift of those at the bottom of the heap, so that at some future date the need for reservations will no longer exist
